Edward Woods

**Edward Woods (1903-1989)** was an American actor primarily known for his intense film career in the early 1930s. His most celebrated performance was that of Matt Doyle, the protagonist's best friend, in the classic gangster movie *The Public Enemy* (1931).

Originally cast as the lead role of Tom Powers, he was later swapped with James Cagney, a decision that changed the fortunes of both actors and the history of cinema. Nevertheless, his performance was significant and contributed to the film's success.

Woods also appeared in other important films of the era, such as *Waterloo Bridge* (1931) and *The Millionaire* (1931). He often played co-starring or supporting roles, portraying loyal, honest, or slightly naive characters, in contrast to the tougher, more charismatic figures of the protagonists. His film career, though intense for a brief period, never achieved the stature of a major star, and he later dedicated himself primarily to theater.
