His career began in Germany, where he contributed significantly to expressionist cinema. Iconic works such as the dystopian *Metropolis* (1927) and the psychological thriller *M – The Monster of Düsseldorf* (1931), with its pioneering exploration of criminal psychology, defined his dark and profound style.

Having fled the Nazi regime, he moved to Hollywood, where he became a master of *film noir*. Films like *Fury* (1936) and *The Big Heat* (1953) explore themes of paranoia, revenge, and moral ambiguity.
