Gaston Modot (1887-1970) was a French actor, an emblematic figure of French cinema for over half a century. His career spanned the silent and sound film eras, collaborating with the greatest directors.
He gained renown for his participation in key films of the avant-garde and poetic realism. Among his most memorable performances is the role of the "revolutionary" in Luis Buñuel's *L'Age d'Or* (1930), making him an iconic face of surrealism. He also appeared in masterpieces such as Jean Renoir's *La Grande Illusione* (1937) and Marcel Carné's *Les Enfants du Paradis* (1945).
Modot was a versatile character actor, recognizable for his expressive face. He was often cast in supporting yet impactful roles: from the intellectual to the ambiguous individual, from the villain to the eccentric character, always capable of imbuing his characters with depth.
