
Hugh Griffith
Hugh Griffith (1912-1980) was a Welsh actor, renowned for his prolific film and theatre career, particularly for his distinctive character roles.
An Academy Award winner for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Sheikh Ilderim in *Ben-Hur* (1959), Griffith distinguished himself through his ability to bring eccentric characters to life, often irascible but with an underlying good nature, and an unmistakable voice.
Among his most memorable performances were his role as the crude but charismatic Squire Western in *Tom Jones* (1963), which earned him a BAFTA nomination, and the judge in the musical *Oliver!* (1968).
