Jûkichi Uno
**Jûkichi Uno (1914-1988)** was one of Japan's most prolific and respected actors. His long career spanned decades, working with masters such as Akira Kurosawa, Yasujirō Ozu, Mikio Naruse, and Masaki Kobayashi.
He is remembered for his emotionally powerful and often complex roles, playing characters who reflected dignity, seriousness, or inner turmoil. Among his most famous performances are those of the gruff writer who discovers his illness in Kurosawa's *Ikiru* (1952) and the investigating samurai in Kobayashi's *Harakiri* (1962). His sober but intense style allowed him to play authoritarian, intellectual, or tormented figures, making him an iconic face of classic Japanese cinema.
