Maurice Evans

**Maurice Evans (1901–1989)** was a British actor. Best known for his distinguished stage career, particularly in Shakespearean plays, Evans also made a significant impact in film.

Among his most memorable film roles are the learned and austere Dr. Zaius in the original *Planet of the Apes* (1968), Rosemary's friend Hutch in Roman Polanski's *Rosemary's Baby* (1968), and the Ghost of Christmas Past in *Christmas Ghosts* (1970).

Often cast as authoritative, intellectual, or morally ambiguous characters, Evans excelled at portraying complex figures, using his impeccable diction and theatrical presence to imbue even the most eccentric roles with dignity and gravitas.
