Ralph Bellamy

Ralph Bellamy (Chicago, 1904 – Santa Monica, 1991) was an American actor, known for his prolific film career, often in the role of the "second man" or the honest but boring suitor, destined to lose the female lead.

He particularly excelled in screwball comedies, where his performances alongside Cary Grant were memorable, such as in *The Awful Truth* (1937), where he loses Irene Dunne, and *His Girl Friday* (1940).

He demonstrated great versatility, transitioning from good-natured roles to more sinister characters in his later years, such as Dr. Sapirstein in Roman Polanski's *Rosemary's Baby* (1968) and the role of the Duke brothers in *Trading Places* (1983). Bellamy was a highly regarded character actor, capable of imbuing his characters with humanity and often unintentional comedy.
