Abbas Kiarostami

Abbas Kiarostami (1940-2016) was an Iranian film director, among the most influential in world cinema. His work is renowned for its poetic realism, humanism, and ability to blur the line between fiction and documentary. He often used non-professional actors and seemingly simple stories to explore profound philosophical questions about life, death, and reality.

His films, often set in rural Iran and featuring children or ordinary people, explore themes such as the search for meaning, resilience, and interaction with nature. Among his most significant works are the "Koker Trilogy" (*Where Is the Friend's Home?*, *And Life Goes On*, *Through the Olive Trees*) and the experimental *Close-Up*. He reached the pinnacle of his career with the Palme d'Or at Cannes for *Taste of Cherry* (1997). His contemplative style and unique vision left a lasting legacy in global cinema.
