Alain Resnais

Alain Resnais (1922-2014) was one of the most influential French post-war directors, celebrated for his innovative exploration of themes of memory, time, and trauma.

His career was marked by a rigorous formal exploration. He emerged with powerful documentaries such as *Nuit et Brouillard* (1955), on the Holocaust, which already anticipated his fragmented and reflective approach.

He achieved international fame with two seminal works: *Hiroshima mon amour* (1959) and *L'année dernière à Marienbad* (1961). These films, made in collaboration with prominent screenwriters like Marguerite Duras and Alain Robbe-Grillet, redefined cinematic narrative with their non-linear structures, temporal ambiguity, and psychological inquiry.

Often associated with, yet distinct from, the Nouvelle Vague (he belonged to the "Rive Gauche" group), Resnais continued to experiment, with films such as *Mon oncle d'Amérique* (1980), which blended drama and scientific concepts, and the lighter but sophisticated musical comedies *On connaît la chanson* (1997) and *Pas sur la bouche* (2003). His cinema remains a constant inquiry into the perception and construction of reality.
