Edward Yang (1947-2007) was a Taiwanese film director and a key figure in the Taiwan New Wave. His works explore modernity and urban alienation in Taipei, complex human dynamics, and the search for identity. His style is contemplative, with intricate narratives that capture the nuances of the human condition.

His masterpiece *Yi Yi – and One and Two* (2000), winner of the Palme d'Or for Best Director at Cannes, reflects on life, death, and family in middle-class Taipei. *Gulingjie Shaonian Sharen Shijian* (A Brighter Summer Day, 1991), a four-hour epic, explores youth violence and social tensions in 1960s Taipei. Films such as *Kongbu Fenzi* (The Terrorizers, 1986) and *Qingmei Zhuma* (Taipei Story, 1985) analyze existential challenges and urban anomie.

Yang left a legacy of profound social and psychological observation, establishing himself as a master of world cinema.
