**John Landis** (born in 1950) is an influential American director, screenwriter, and producer, known for his irreverent comedies and distinctive approach to the genre.

He rose to prominence with the cult comedy **Animal House** (1978), which redefined the slob comedy genre. His eclectic style is evident in iconic works such as **The Blues Brothers** (1980), a fusion of comedy, music, and action, and **Trading Places** (1983), a brilliant social satire starring Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd.

Landis also skillfully blended horror with black comedy in **An American Werewolf in London** (1981), praised for its pioneering special effects. His filmmaking is characterized by a frenetic pace, sharp humor, ensemble casts, and a frequent use of music. He also directed Michael Jackson's groundbreaking music video **Thriller**.
