Agnes Moorehead
Agnes Moorehead (1900-1974) was a prominent American actress, renowned for her prolific film career and unforgettable character roles. A founding member of Orson Welles' Mercury Theatre, she made her film debut in Welles' masterpiece *Citizen Kane* (1941), portraying Charles Foster Kane's mother.
Moorehead distinguished herself by her ability to infuse complexity into characters who were often eccentric, strong, stern, or authoritarian. She received four Academy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actress for her performances in *The Magnificent Ambersons* (1942) – another collaboration with Welles –, *Mrs. Parkington* (1944), *Johnny Belinda* (1948), and *Hush... Hush, Sweet Charlotte* (1964). In the latter film, her portrayal of the menacing Velma is particularly iconic. Her distinctive voice and imposing stage presence made her a master of supporting roles.
