Ronald Lee Ermey (1944-2018), better known as R. Lee Ermey, was an American actor and former United States Marine Corps drill instructor. His film career is inextricably linked to the iconic role of Gunnery Sergeant Hartman in Stanley Kubrick's *Full Metal Jacket* (1987), for which he earned a Golden Globe nomination. His portrayal, based in part on his real-life experience, became a benchmark for military characters.
