Taiji Tonoyama
**Taiji Tonoyama (1915-1989)** was a prolific Japanese actor, best known for his intense collaborations with director Shohei Imamura. He distinguished himself for his portrayal of complex characters, often on the margins of society: ordinary men, desperate, grotesque or cynical, but always deeply human.
Among his most memorable roles are those in Imamura's iconic films such as *Buta to gunkan* (Pigs and Battleships), *Nippon Konchuki* (The Insect Woman), *Akai Satsui* (Intent to Kill) and *Fukushû suru wa ware ni ari* (The Revenge is Mine). His style was characterized by raw realism and a powerful stage presence, which enabled him to embody the complexity of human nature without filters. Tonoyama also worked with other prominent directors, helping to define a type of Japanese cinema focused on everyday life and primal urges.
