Totò

**Antonio De Curtis**, professionally known as **Totò** (Naples, 1898 – Rome, 1967), was one of the greatest Italian comic actors. His film career, which began in the 1930s, took off in the post-war period, making him an icon.

A master of mime, gestures, and the surreal use of language, Totò created a unique comedic genre. His characters were often poor, cunning, or bumbling, intent on navigating life's difficulties with ingenious cunning and disarming ingenuousness. He utilized the "macchietta" (character sketch), lightning-fast gags, and improvisation.

Among his most celebrated films are: *Miseria e nobiltà* (1954), *Totò, Peppino e la malafemmina* (1956) – a masterpiece of popular comedy – and *Guardie e ladri* (1951), where he also demonstrated dramatic talents. Also recognized for more melancholic or auteur-driven roles, such as in Pasolini's *Uccellacci e uccellini* (1966), Totò remains a pillar of Italian comedy and cinema.
